Ngukurr Arts Centre
Visual Identity for an Indigenous Art Centre in South East Arnhem Land
Located on the banks of the Roper River in South East Arnhem Land, Ngukurr Arts Centre represents artists from the many clan and language groups of the Yugul Mangi people.
The project required a visual identity that respected the cultural significance of the Art Centre while creating a cohesive look across physical signage, artwork presentation and digital communications. The result was a contemporary identity that allowed the artists and their work to remain the focus.
The approach
Working within a culturally significant environment required a thoughtful and restrained design approach.
Rather than creating a bold commercial brand, the visual identity was designed to complement the artwork and reflect the professionalism of the Art Centre. Every design element needed to work consistently across large-scale signage, gallery materials and digital platforms while remaining respectful of the artists and the stories their work represents.
